What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) functions as a secure digital key. Certifying Authorities (CAs) issue these certificates to verify and validate an individual's identity. Digital signatures rely on public key encryption for their creation. Each DSC includes details such as the user's name, postal code, country, email address, certificate issuance date, and the issuing certifying authority's name. DSCs typically have a validity period of one to two years, with renewal options available before expiration.

Certifying Authorities Issuing Digital Signature Certificates
In India, the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) designates Certifying Authorities (CAs) responsible for issuing Digital Signature Certificates. Categories of Digital Signature Certificates
Sign Certificates
Individuals use Sign Certificates to digitally sign documents. These certificates can be applied to PDFs, files, or various documents for purposes such as GST return submissions, income tax filings, MCA online forms, and other web-based services. A Sign Certificate validates a document's integrity and confirms the user's identity, assuring the recipient that the data is original and untampered.
Encrypt Certificates
Encrypt Certificates are designed for securing sensitive and confidential information, including files, documents, and other data. This type of DSC encryption is specifically for confidential records. It enables businesses and companies to encrypt and securely upload documents to online portals. These certificates also facilitate the secure encryption and transmission of personal data, making them ideal for e-commerce, legal, and e-tender filing documents, as well as other private records.
Sign and Encrypt Certificates
The Sign and Encrypt Certificate offers dual functionality, allowing users to both sign and encrypt data. This type is commonly employed for submitting government documents, forms, and applications. It is particularly beneficial for users who require both authentication and confidentiality for the information they exchange.
DSC Classification Tiers
The appropriate Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) class depends on the applicant's profile and the intended use. Certifying authorities issue DSCs in three distinct classes.
Class 1 Certificates
Class 1 Certificates are designated for individual or private subscribers. Their primary function is to verify the user's name and email address against the certifying authority's database.
Class 2 Certificates
Class 2 Certificates were previously issued to authorized signatories for e-filing various forms on government platforms, including the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), income tax, and GST websites. However, the Controller of Certifying Authority mandated the discontinuation of Class 2 Certificates from January 1, 2021. Since then, Class 3 Certificates have replaced them.
Class 3 Certificates
Class 3 Certificates are necessary for participating in online e-auctions and tenders across India. Vendors intending to bid in online tenders are required to possess a Class 3 digital signature certificate. Following the CCA's discontinuation of Class 2 Certificates on January 1, 2021, all individuals needing to sign Registrar of Companies (ROC) forms, customs filings, income tax forms, patent and trademark applications, GST applications, and other government forms online must now obtain Class 3 Certificates.
Steps to Obtain a Digital Signature Certificate
- Navigate to a Certifying Authority's (CA) website, locate the Class 3 DSC registration or application section on their homepage, and begin filling out the form.
- Provide the following essential information in the DSC application form:
- The desired class of DSC.
- The required validity period.
- The certificate type (either 'sign only' or 'sign and encrypt').
- The applicant's name and contact information.
- Current residential address.
- GST number and details from identity proof documents.
- A declaration.
- Documentation for proof of identity.
- Documentation for proof of address.
- Details of the attestation officer.
- Payment information.
- Upload a recent photograph and electronically sign the declaration.
- Submit all necessary supporting documents. Alternatively, if the CA provides Aadhaar eKYC-based authentication, selecting this option negates the need for document uploads. Applicants can also visit CAs directly with original documents and self-attested copies.
- Complete the payment for the DSC issuance and submit the application form.
- The CA will then review your application and documents, subsequently issuing the DSC electronically.

Digital Signature Certificate Download Process
The procedure for downloading a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) differs among various Certifying Authorities (CAs). Here are the download steps for several CAs.
e-Mudhra DSC Download Steps
- Insert the USB token into your computer.
- Open the files, then click on
ePass2003India.setup.exe. - Choose your language, click 'OK', then select 'Private CSP' and 'Install' to set up ePass2003. Click 'Finish' once complete.
- Establish a new PIN for the USB token for DSC download.
- Find the 'ePass2003 token manager' using the Windows search bar.
- Input the default PIN, then click 'change user pin' to set a new one.
- Go to the eMudhra website, click 'Download Certificate', then 'emClick'.
- Provide the application number and the challenge code sent to your registered mobile number.
- Enter the token password and click 'Agree and Download'.
Capricorn DSC Download Steps
- Access the Capricorn website.
- Click the 'Download DSC' button.
- Enter your Order ID, the PIN code from your applicant's address, and the Download Key received on your registered mobile number, then click 'Submit'.
- Select 'FIPS Token' and click 'Download'.
Pantasign DSC Download Steps
- Go to the Pantasign website.
- Click on the 'Downloads' button.
- Initiate the utility download by clicking the respective button.
- Extract the downloaded utility; then open the 'PantaCharge' folder.
- Launch
PantaCharge.exeand click 'Get Started'. - Input the Application Number and Passcode received via registered mobile and email.
- Click 'Login', then 'Download Certificate'.
- Enter the Token Password and click 'OK' to complete the DSC download.
(n) Code Solutions DSC Download Steps
- Connect the e-token to your computer.
- Launch the DSC Download Utility.
- Input the Customer ID and Passcode sent to your registered mobile number.
- Choose the Token Type and enter the Token Password.
- Click 'Submit' to proceed.
- Select the DSC Type and click 'Download DSC'.
IDSign DSC Download Steps
- Navigate to the IDSign website.
- Click 'Repository', then select 'Application Links'.
- Under 'IDSign Token Utility', click 'Download'.
- Unzip the downloaded folder.
- Open the
IDSignTokenUtility.exefolder. - Launch
IDSignTokenUtility.exe. - Provide the Reference Number and Mobile Number.
- Enter the Token Password and click 'Download Certificate'.
